You Probably Don’t Know What This Is Called And You May Be Surprised by How Many Uses It Has
If you grew up in a home where traditional foods and old-fashioned kitchen ingredients were used regularly, you may recognize these unusual brown pieces immediately. For many other people, however, they can look completely unfamiliar. They are commonly known as dry coconut, copra, or dried coconut meat, and they have been used in kitchens for generations.
Dry coconut is simply the mature white flesh of the coconut that has been dried until much of its moisture has been removed. The drying process gives it a firm texture, concentrated coconut flavor, and a much longer shelf life than fresh coconut when properly stored.
One of the most popular uses for dry coconut is cooking. It can be chopped into small pieces, grated, toasted, or ground into a paste. It is commonly added to curries, sauces, chutneys, rice dishes, desserts, cakes, cookies, and traditional sweets. Toasting it lightly can bring out a deeper nutty aroma and make it especially delicious as a topping.
Dry coconut can also be used to make coconut milk. Simply blend pieces of dried coconut with warm water and strain the mixture through a fine sieve or clean cloth. The resulting liquid can be used in curries, soups, desserts, smoothies, and many other recipes that call for coconut milk.
Another important traditional use is coconut oil production. Copra is an important raw material for extracting coconut oil. Coconut oil has applications in cooking and is also widely used in hair and skin care products. Many people use coconut oil as a moisturizer for dry skin or as a conditioning treatment for the hair and scalp.
Nutritionally, dry coconut is quite different from fresh coconut because removing water concentrates its calories and nutrients. It contains fat, dietary fiber, and minerals, but it is also calorie-dense. That means a small portion can provide substantial energy, making portion size important for people who are watching their calorie intake or trying to manage their weight.
